"Caparica is an excellent place for surfing, one beach 20km's long with fun waves all the way along. Started off about a third of the way down opposite a good bar called Golphinos (good omelettes, beer, and music) where there always seemed to be a rideable wave even on the smallest days. Surfed at the main break at the very northern end of Caparica quite a few times and had no trouble, locals all seemed fairly friendly as long as you slowly make your way to the main peak, smile, and behave yourself. Caparica varied from 1/2 to 2 metres while I was there, the best and biggest day being a real weird one where it was completely foggy all day, with about 20ft visibility. Caparica is like Watergate on steroids and very consistent, there was always a wave there when elsewhere (Ericeira, Peniche, etc) was flat."
"Drove a few miles further down and found a huge campsite and booked in there, turned out to be a lot cheaper than Orbitur, very clean, and right on the beach."
"The northern end is a small town (good water park if it's flat). This part of the beach has bolder groynes and set up sand banks with excellent peaks and is by far the best part of the beach to surf. The problem is though this is the only place I have ever been in the water and been greeted with hostility. Maybe it has changed now as this was about four years ago (but I would bet that it has got worse) On the up side if you go south for about a mile there is a little cafe on the beach and although not quite as good as in the town the waves are normally still pretty good and this spot is far more mellow."
