" Saunton: The take-offs are much more mellow. There tends to be more room too, especially if you don't mind moving down the beach a little; when Croyde is a zoo, the vibe is much better at Saunton. Rides can be longer on a good day - useful if you're learning. And on the large-clean days it can still be very challenging."

" Croyde: typically forms steeper waves at low tide."

" Saunton: which is just around the corner from Croyde, is a good wave for learning on, as the wave breaks a lot slower and mellower than at Croyde."

" Croyde, Puts, Woolacombe, Saunton: are your main breaks around there. Woolacombe and Saunton are more forgiving and shallower waves so may be easier for a beginner, and you can hire a board at all but Puts' on the beach. If you have a car there are also some other rental places worth checking out with the general rule of thumb being that the further away form the sea the cheaper the hire."
