"Mid Wales wise, the best places are Aberystwyth & Borth which is ok but can get pretty good on it's day. Check out Al Coles website at http://www.forces-of-nature.co.uk for beach info. The entire coast of Ceredigion has a number of spots south of Aber too, that work best in the Autumn.

Further north there is Tywyn, another beach break, but again can be ok on it's day, most Shrewsbury surfers seem to hang out here. In the hurricane season there is a reef break (if you're confident enough on a reef) in Llwyngwril, it's other name is Santana & it's a quality break, works at high tide only holds faces up to 8-10 foot, it's a very good left.

Further north again is the mecca of gogland surfing, Abersoch. There are beaches a plenty here if you search, the main beaches being Porth Neigwl (Hells Mouth) which is a good all round beginners/intermediate wave, Porth Ceiriad (can be a very heavy wave) & Porth Oer (Whistling Sands) which is a wonderful place to surf in the right conditions. There are others...seek & ye shall find....check out http://www.westcoastsurf.co.uk for beach info & daily online surf reports & images of Porth Neigwl. A little further north is Ynys Mon (Anglesey).

It's also worth spending time down in Pembrokeshire, namely Newgale, Whitesands Bay (St Davids) & the best of the bunch Freshwater West near Pembroke. This last one probably being the most consistent break in Cymru, it's worth the extra travelling...believe me."

"..Pilly's Porthcawl surfcheck 09064700859. Pilly is a good chap who lives with in spitting distance of Rest Bay..... basically gets up in the morning, wanders down and has a look. updates the phone line. Surfs. Has breakfast. Updates the line througout the day as conditions change."

"..walk the 10 minutes to one spot over some cliffs and farmland - Marloes Sands in Pembrokeshire. Now this spot is in Stormrider, everyone knows about it, its a big beach, has some fast, long, rides, picks up almost as much swell as Fresh West, has more shelter from westerly winds than Fresh, yet no-one surfs there. Why? Because its 10 minutes walk from the car park. How stupid can you get?"

"...Llangennith (head west straight down the middle of the Gower until you run out of road) but because of the weak swell it must also be on the top half of the tidal push. Because of the tidal currents, the effect on wave size of the tidal push is much more marked there. In fact the tidal push will give enough amplification to turn flat conditions elsewhere into rideable waves. ...don't give up hope when you arrive to find it as flat as a pancake. It will get much bigger. I have been there many times when there has not been a rideable wave until the half tide points when all of a sudden it develops works well for an hour or two and vanishes just as quickly around high tide."

"Freshwater West. Near Milford Haven is a great break on its day. Although the beach can be a very rippy and messed up, the power behind the wave when you hit it right is awesome. Additionally, you have the reef right out in front of the carpark which can be 2ft even when the rest of Pembs. is flat, and goes off on a good swell. Mind you, when it gets over 4ft, beatings are guaranteed, beach or reef, plus there's the quicksand at the N. end of the beach."

"Mid Wales, with it's various point & beach breaks, works well on a southerly groundswell (and winds) coming up from the Bay of Biscay. Key spots around New Quay (Tresaith) and Aberystwyth (HarbourTrap)"

"Porthcawl, in South Wales, has a good right point break known as Black Rock. Further round in the Gower Peninsular you have Llangennith with it's beach breaks, and Pete's Reef just round 'the corner'. Get into Pembroke for Freshwater West, Whitesands, & Manorbier, although these can get crowded"
